St Mary Magdalene Drama Group presents Murder in the Cathedral

Parish Magazine ~ September 2017

The Rev'd Dr Gordon GilesDear friends,

You may well have heard by now that the Rev’d Barry Oakley, sometime Vicar of All Saints’ Edmonton, and a great supporter, member and retired assistant priest to this parish, died on Saturday 12th August. We send our love to Margaret and Jenny and Chris, and remember Barry with gratitude and great affection. The Prayer and Care group are especially indebted to Barry, as he began the Healing Team out of which they evolved. Others will remember Barry and Margaret on our Chinese trip back in 2008; also the sermon he preached on the fiftieth anniversary of his ordination, and numerous other occasions on which he covered Sunday services.

It will be an honour and a privilege to hold Barry’s funeral at St Mary Magdalene’s, on TUESDAY 5th SEPTEMBER at 2pm (and a reception at Bush Hill Park Golf Club afterwards.

With love to you all,

Gordon

Murder in the Cathedral

The Drama Group are presenting ‘Murder in the Cathedral’ by T S Eliot on 15, 16, 17 September in St Thomas-a-Becket church Northaw (Friday), St. Luke’s church in Browning Road (Saturday) and at St. Mary Magdalene church on Sunday evening.

Rehearsals are under way and there will be some new faces as well as familiar ones.

The ‘touring’ will be great fun and the performance will also include some choral accompaniment. If you would like to take part in the production as one of the chorus or help in any other way, or simply know more about what we are doing, please contact Chris or any member of the company.

Book the dates - it’s going to be good!

Coffee Mornings

Our next coffee morning in aid of the organ fund will be held at The Vicarage by Gordon and Jessica so hope to see lots of you there on Tuesday 19th September at 10.45 a.m. as usual.

I just thought it would be nice to thank all the people who have hosted mornings so far (4 more to come) and to thank all the loyal supporters who have already amazingly raised almost £1,600 as well as enjoying lovely friendly mornings so keep up the good work and, of course, it would be good to see some new faces.

News from the Home Group

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you for supporting our opportunity at hosting August’s Coffee Morning! Following some enthusiastic sprucing up before the event, I’m now ahead with Christmas cleaning preparations and happy to be ahead with anything! Receiving a few apologies, missed you guys, accompanied by grateful donations, which included some from neighbours whom Dawn took the time to invite. Our eclectic and colourful mix of, rescued, online auction won, charity shop bargains and gifts of garden chairs and cushions assembled and ready, no matter the preparations, would we even be using the garden?

Having kept an eagle eye all morning on the lawn, Joon our neighbour’s visiting eleven-and-a-half year old Shih Tzu produced the “necessary”, as Rita will testify, moments before welcoming our first guests. Resembling more closely a Star Wars teddy-bear-like Ewok than the Griffon Bruxellois George Lucas based them upon (in our opinion). Lovely to look at, delightful to know, her settled temperament reminds me of the peaceful rough haired Golden Retriever I grew up with “Salome Sam”, “Sandy” for short; one of eleven canine companions I’ve had the pleasure of and blessing Dawn with her missed canine fix. Unperturbed by events, Joon proceeded to demonstrate her adeptness at social etiquette, by nonchalantly lying at everyone’s feet in turn.

As Rita took the reins in the kitchen, I was released to host. God graciously blessed all twenty three of us, including our direct neighbours, with wonderfully clement weather. Save for one cloud insistent upon depositing a few drops, then for some amusing moments brollies went up, joining the colourful bunting’s parade.

A plethora of raffle prizes, bring-and-buy, scones with jam and clotted cream, Rita’s cake and a selection of gluten-free, added to the enjoyment of this social and fund raising occasion. The new bargain priced swinging seat, only put together by Ken and tested by myself and Dawn the day before, was also a comfortable and popular attraction. Our fun in the sun raising a stunning £197.80 (including gift aid) for the organ.

Musing aloud “The things we do for love”, Ken’s slick response was “10cc” (1977!).

God bless. Love

Laura, Ken and Dawn Cope.
