Parish Magazine ~ October 2021

Dear friends,

Remembering the people of Afghanistan I found this prayer to say for them.

A Prayer for Afghanistan:

O God of mercy and of peace,
We hold before you the peoples of Afghanistan.
Be living bread to those who are hungry each day
Be healing and wholeness to those who have no access to health care amidst the ravages of pandemic
Be their true home to all who have been displaced
Be peace to those engaged in armed conflict and those who live within its shadow.
Turn our hearts and minds to your ways of just and gentle peace,
Open our eyes to see you in all acts of compassionate care
Strengthen our hearts to step out in solidarity with your suffering people and
Hold us all in your unfailing love.
We pray in the name of Jesus Christ, who emptied himself of all but love in order to bring life in all its fullness.

Elections to General Synod are about to begin. Many candidates have committed to stand under the banner “Save the Parish”. They have pledged to resist plans to redirect resources away from parochial ministry. I ask your prayers for the candidates and voters and for the future of the Church of England.

With my prayer and love, James.

Harvest Festival and Gift Day

On Sunday October 10th we will be having our Harvest Festival which this year includes our Gift Day. Non-perishable food and other household essentials can be brought to church where it will be given to the North Enfield Food Bank. The Gift Day this year is a collection for a defibrillator for Church and Hall users and the surplus will be going towards the Vestry fund.

Rochester Cathedral event

Choral Evensong at Rochester Cathedral

On Saturday 23rd October our choir will be joined by friends to sing Choral Evensong at Rochester Cathedral. The anthem is a new work by our very own organist Jonathan Marten set to words by Canon Gordon Giles in memory of His Royal Highness The Duke Of Edinburgh. We hope to hire a coach to take the choir and any member of the congregation who wishes to join them (you can, of course, make your own way there). We will leave from St Mary Magdalene at 9:15am and begin our return from Rochester at 6:30pm. Please let us know by October 7th to book your place, we need to have definite numbers so that we know what size coach to book. The cost will be approximately £15 (if we can do this for less, we will).

Coffee Mornings

Another really lovely successful morning was held on Tuesday at Eleanor's house in glorious sunshine enabling some to venture into her beautiful garden. We had 21 attendees with a few apologies and raised £209.15 on the morning which will increase to £261.56 when Gift Aid is added. There was much chat, fun with the raffle and Eleanor's gorgeous cakes to enjoy.

So in just 2 mornings we have raised £611.56 towards the renovation of the Vestry kitchen so please keep coming along to these get-togethers. Our next morning will be held at 11a.m. on Tuesday 19th October at Pam's house 307 Lonsdale Drive, EN2 7LB and she is looking forward to seeing lots of you there. If it is helpful the 456 and 377 buses stops at Highlands School opposite Pam's road.

Please put the following dates all at 11a.m. in your diary/calendar & hope to see lots of you all.

Tuesday 19th October - Pam Hagan
Tuesday 16th November - Gill & David Bird
Tuesday 21st December - Rita Barker

Best wishes to all - keep safe/keep smiling & keep carrying on - God bless - love & thanks
