Nine Lessons and Carols
The traditional ‘Carol Service’ of Nine ‘Lessons’ or readings from the Bible with Anthems by the choir and well known carols for the congregation to sing.
The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols is a service of Christian worship celebrating the birth of Jesus that is traditionally followed at Christmas. The Bishop of Truro, Edward White Benson, formalised a service that had been held on Christmas Eve 1878 with Nine Lessons for use on Christmas Eve (24 December) 1880. They tell the story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus in nine short Bible readings from Genesis, the prophetic books and the Gospels, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols, hymns and choir music.
