The Rev'd. Dr James Lawson vicar's blog

Dear Friends

I came across a two-word discipleship challenge. The two words are “over” and “under”. Take for example the issue of forgiveness. Peter asked Jesus in Matthew 18:12, how many times must I forgive? 7 times? Jesus answered 70 times 7, in other words, offer forgiveness boldly. Being under the authority of Scripture means Lord, heal my heart, my hurt and sadness that I may forgive. Being over the authority of Scripture means saying, “I don’t think that applies to me. Jesus didn’t really mean it that way, and no one knows what I’ve been through.” I know that I still want to be in control sometimes and not operate out of any authority but my own. So, this two -word discipleship challenge – over – under – is real for me sometimes What about for you?

Love and prayers,

James.

Vic Smith

Many will have heard by now that, sadly, Vic passed away on August 7th, aged 92. He was greatly loved by all and faithfully served the church as treasurer for 20 years. Now reunited with his beloved wife, Sheila. Vic’s funeral will be on Monday 5th September at 12noon in Church followed by cremation at Enfield Crematorium at 1:30pm. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

There will be a collection at the back of church and at the wake, being held at Enfield Golf Club following the Service, for the ongoing work of St Mary Magdalene church, a cause dear to both Vic and Sheila’s heart. Our World for Ukraine

If you enjoyed watching Etcetera Morris dance at our Jubilee Party, then you will be pleased to know they are coming back. On October 1st they will be taking part in our Folk Evening, which will be a charity event in aid of Ukraine.

But folk is not all about Morris dancing – other dances, songs, stories and traditions have been handed down the generations in all parts of the world and are still performed today. Here at St Mary’s we have a very diverse community, so I’m sure many of you will have something from your part of the world or area of the UK that you could contribute to the evening – a dance, a song, a poem, a folk tale or legend. Maybe you could show us how to put on an Indian sari or a Nigerian headress, how to do the Māori Hakka or make a Welsh cake.

If you think you might have something to contribute then please come and talk to me so I can start putting a programme together. I’ve given you loads of time so get your thinking caps on!

Of course it goes without saying that food and drink will be available on the night in true St Mary’s fashion, but more of that nearer the time.

Judy
