Livestream Service 26-05-03: The Fifth Sunday of Easter

Join us as we come together to celebrate God's love and mercy in our parish Eucharist Service for the Fifth Sunday of Easter.
The Service begins at 10:00 am on Sunday morning and the livestream begins
approximately five minutes before the Service starts.

Hallelujah! Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! Hallelujah!

St Mary Magdalene receives no funding from external sources, all monies required for the day to day running costs, maintaining, and keeping our beautiful church looking its best and also giving to external, worthwhile mission work is raised through our stewardship giving and fund-raising activities. We are a registered charity; audited accounts are published each year and filed with the Charity Commission and we are so grateful for the generous and sacrificial giving that makes our work possible.

Our clergy support, guide and strengthen us; they are there for us at times of need. We find solace in our beautiful building, which has provided the setting for so many memorable occasions in our lives. Every week we are moved by the beautiful music performed by our talented choir and organists. All of this has helped us to grow in faith, to discover the joy in following Christ, experience a feeling of belonging and a sense of purpose in serving others.

In an age where thousands feel isolated, suffer the effects of poverty, feel worthless and hopeless, what we do at St Mary Magdalene, Enfield is more important than ever. We want to share this with others in our community – but we need the resources to do this.

Opening hymn

Now is eternal life

Now is eternal life
If risen with Christ we stand
In Him to life re-born
And held within His hand
No more we fear death's ancient dread
In Christ arisen from the dead

The human mind so long
Brooded o'er life's brief span
Was it O God for naught
For naught that life began
Thou art our hope our vital breath
Shall hope undying end in death

And God the living God
Stooped down to share our state
By death destroying death
Christ opened wide life's gate
He lives who died He reigns on high
Who live in Him shall never die

Unfathomed love divine
Reign thou within my heart
From thee nor depth nor height
Nor life nor death can part
My life is hid in God with thee
Now and through all eternity

Thee will I love and serve
Now in time's passing day
Thy hand shall hold me fast
When time is done away
In God's unknown eternal spheres
To serve Him through eternal years

Collect

Almighty God, who through your only-begotten Son Jesus Christ have overcome death and opened to us the gate of everlasting life: grant that, as by your grace going before us you put into our minds good desires, so by your continual help we may bring them to good effect; through Jesus Christ our risen Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The first reading

Acts 7.55-end

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Stephen gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56‘Look,’ he said, ‘I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!’ 57But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. 58Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ 60Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them.’ When he had said this, he died.

All: Thanks be to God

The second reading

1 Peter 2.2-10

Like newborn infants, long for the pure, spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow into salvation—3if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

4Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and 5like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6For it stands in scripture:
‘See, I am laying in Zion a stone,
   a cornerstone chosen and precious;
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’
7To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe,
‘The stone that the builders rejected
   has become the very head of the corner’,
8and
‘A stone that makes them stumble,
   and a rock that makes them fall.’
They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.

9But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
10 Once you were not a people,
   but now you are God’s people;
once you had not received mercy,
   but now you have received mercy.

This is the word of the Lord

All: Thanks be to God

Gradual Hymn

Ye choirs of new Jerusalem

Ye choirs of new Jerusalem,
your sweetest notes employ,
the Paschal victory to hymn
in strains of holy joy.

How Judah’s Lion burst his chains,
and crushed the serpent’s head;
and brought with him, from death’s domains,
the long-imprisoned dead.

Triumphant in his glory now
his sceptre ruleth all,
earth, heaven, and hell before him bow,
and at his footstool fall.

While joyful thus his praise we sing,
his mercy we implore,
into his palace bright to bring
and keep us evermore.

All glory to the Father be,
all glory to the Son,
all glory, Holy Ghost, to thee,
while endless ages run.

Alleluia! Amen.

Gospel

John 14.1-14

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John

All: Glory to you O Lord

Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. 2In my Father’s house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. 4And you know the way to the place where I am going.’ 5Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’ 6Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.’

8Philip said to him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.’ 9Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father”? 10Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. 12Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.’

All: Praise to you O Christ

Offertory Hymn

Christ is alive! Let Christians sing

Christ is alive! Let Christians sing.
The cross stands empty to the sky.
Let streets and homes with praises ring.
Love, drowned in death, shall never die.

Christ is alive! No longer bound
to distant years in Palestine,
but saving, healing, here and now,
and touching ev’ry place and time.

In ev’ry insult, rift, and war,
where colour, scorn, or wealth divide,
Christ suffers still, yet loves the more,
and lives, where even hope has died.

Christ is alive, and comes to bring
good news to this and ev’ry age,
till earth and sky and ocean ring
with joy, with justice, love, and praise.

Communion Hymn

Good Joseph had a garden

Good Joseph had a garden,
close by that sad green hill
where Jesus died a bitter death
to save mankind from ill.

One evening in that garden,
their faces dark with gloom,
they laid the Saviour’s body
within good Joseph’s tomb.

There came the holy women
with spices and with tears;
the angels tried to comfort them,
but could not calm their fears.

Came Mary to that garden:
and sobbed with heart forlorn;
she thought she heard the gardener ask:
‘whom seekest thou this mom?’

She heard her own name spoken,
and then she lost her care:
all in his strength and beauty
the risen Lord stood fair!

Good Joseph had a garden;
amid its trees so tall
the Lord Christ rose on Easter Day:
he lives to save us all.

And as he rose at Easter
he is alive for aye,
the very same Lord Jesus Christ
who hears us sing today.

Go tell the Lord Christ’s message,
the Easter triumph sing,
till all his waiting children know
that Jesus is their King.

Post Communion Collect

Eternal God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life: grant us to walk in his way, to rejoice in his truth, and to share his risen life; who is alive and reigns, now and for ever. Amen.

Recessional Hymn

Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son

Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son,
endless is the victory thou o’er death hast won;
angels in bright raiment rolled the stone away,
kept the folded grave-clothes where thy body lay.

Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son,
endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won
.

Lo, Jesus meets us, risen from the tomb;
lovingly he greets us, scatters fear and gloom;
let the church with gladness hymns of triumph sing,
for her Lord now liveth, death hath lost its sting:

Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son,
endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won
.

No more we doubt thee, glorious Prince of Life;
life is naught without thee: aid us in our strife;
make us more than conquerors through thy deathless love;
bring us safe through Jordan to thy home above:

Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son,
endless is the victory thou o'er death hast won.
